Hotels and sustainability
As a company celebrating its 25th anniversary, sustainability is at the heart of all of our activities. From the eco-responsible building practices we follow to the charitable donations we make, from the financial health of our organisation to the training programs we have developed for our team, each decision we make is guided by the knowledge that we are contributing to the sustainable growth of our communities.
We follow best practices in governance and are proud of our ranking as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies for more than six consecutive years.
We support local businesses and designers
We encourage local sourcing of our products and services to give back to the communities where we do business. We employ 500 people across Canada and support hundreds of jobs indirectly thanks to our local procurement policies and hotels under construction.
Groupe Germain Hotels also supports the next generation of hoteliers and encourages local designers and artisans whenever possible. For example:
- We support local hospitality schools and offer internships in every one of our Alt and Le Germain hotels.
- Le Germain hotel staff wears designer clothing created by Bustle Clothing and Marie Saint Pierre. Doormen wear Harricana hats made out of recycled fur.
We believe in being eco-responsible
Montréal-based Lemay Michaud Architecture Design created all Alt Hotels and Le Germain Hotels. Our most recent Le Germain boutique-hotels in Calgary and in Toronto’s Maple Leaf Square and new Alt Hotels were designed and built with careful attention to environmental conservation, efficiency and controls. Several green features were incorporated into their design, which not only enhance guests' comfort, but contribute to the global effort to help preserve the environment. Geothermal heating and cooling systems, heat recovery programs, low-E windows to provide maximum light with minimum heat loss, and central room-key lighting control were integrated into the properties.
We use products that can be reused, refilled or recycled and all of our hotels are smoke-free. We also encourage recycling by providing easy access to bins in both public and private areas.
Together, these measures allow guests to participate in our conservation effort.
We believe in supporting our communities
At Groupe Germain Hotels respect for people—whether they are guests, employees, partners, or fellow citizens—is the mainstay of our business philosophy. We support a number of local charities and events every year and although each charitable initiative is praiseworthy and deserves consideration, we cannot always support each one. With this in mind, we have adopted clear and precise guidelines to help guide our community investment activities.
Our sponsorship program gives special weight to charity-oriented causes, particularly those that touch disadvantaged and young families, education, the arts and athletics. However, other than the exclusions mentioned below, we study each and every request we receive very carefully.
